Continuing our look at a few odd or different approaches to rowing over the years, meet the rowing hydrofoil:
Another interesting idea but, watching the video, there’s no such thing as light rowing as you have to work fairly hard to keep up on the hydrofoil. A reasonably high rating also seems critical to success and, when the boat does ‘”dive”, it is often quite dramatic. Rigging the swivel height would be interesting as well, as there is a fairly drastic change in heights when the boat is planing on the hydrofoil.
It is also interesting to note that the boat with the sliding rigger is much more efficient than the standard rigged single, presumably because there is less fore and aft weight transfer, allowing the hydrofoils to stay more level.
I wonder what will be next?
