Grafton Rowing Club Competes at Masters

Grafton Rowing Club masters rowers had another great season in 200-2001, again winning the NRRA pointscore.

We also sent a contingent of rowers to the 2001 NSW Masters Championships for the first time in a few years.

The regatta was held on the Manning River at Taree on the weekend of May 19 and 20 in rather wet conditions (it poured most of the time - as evidenced by Cheryl's attire at right).

Our members congratulate Manning River Rowing Club on their fine hosting of the regatta and look forward to doing as good a job next year.

This was the first NSW Masters for many of these rowers, but they performed well on and off the water (and at the dinner dance on Saturday night!!), as well as having a few of our members act as officials for the regatta.

For the first time in several years, Grafton Rowing Club had some of our ladies competing in the NSW Masters. The C 4x (Cheryl Cavanagh, Ann Collins, Marg Doughan and Jude McBean) are shown at left trying to keep warm in the freezing conditions. This is the first masters for three of these ladies (in fact it is the first season for two of them!), but they made it through to the final of their event in fine form, even though Cheryl had about four rows in a little over 90 minutes! Congratulations ladies!

The River Rats continued on their development program with a bronze in the F 4x, following on from their success at the Asia Pacific Games last year. The Rats (right) had a ring-in this time, with club captain Ken Maughan in the boat, keeping them on their toes. (Good to see Ken competing again - and Thommo too in the eight!). This isn't enough for them though!!!! The boys (John Brien, Tony Gallagher, Ken Maughan and Pat Gallagher) continue their training now in preparation for the 65km rowathon from Iluka to Grafton on July 7!

Michael Collins and Peter Alford (left) celebrate their bronze in the B 2-.

It was certainly great to see Grafton competing again at NSW Masters, particularly to see full crews made up of black & gold "bumblebee" outfits rather than composite crews with mixtures of club colours - we hope to expand upon this in the years to come!
