Grafton Rowers Perform Well at Asia-Pacific Games
CLARENCE Valley rowers were among the medals at the Asia Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast.
Grafton Rowing Club rowers won a total of 14 medals from 19 events.
Rowing under the banner Roches River Rats, the team of Geoff Edgar, John Brien, Tony Gallagher, Pat Gallagher and Steve McKimm each won medals in an array of events.

Edgar led the way with a total of seven medals including two gold, three silver and two bronze.
Brien won three medals while Tony Gallagher chipped in with two medals for the regatta. Pat Gallagher and McKimm each added one medal to Grafton's haul.
Edgar teamed with a Canberra crew to win gold in the 35-and-over quad scull and 43-and-over quad scull in a regatta record time. He also teamed with a Canberra crew to win silver in the 35-and-over and 43-and-over eights. In the 50-and-over double scull Edgar teamed with Lismore's Matthew Flanagan to win silver. As well as his performances on the water, Edgar also coached the Grafton team in the absence of regular coach Ken Maughan.
Brien and Tony Gallagher teamed with Lower Clarence rower Harold Kratz and Keith Fletcher from Lismore to win bronze in the 60-and-over fours. In the 60-and-over eights Brien also picked up silver along with Lower Clarence oarsman Gordon Law.
More than 11,000 competitors from 45 countries have competed in more than 40 sports during the Asia Pacific Masters Games which began on October 28, 2000 and will run until November 5.
Brien said the veterans section of the Grafton Rowing Club were going from strength to strength. He said he hoped the club's success at the Asia Pacific Games would attract new veteran members.
