Regattas - Page 2

Racing at Northern Rivers Rowing Association regattas is divided into classes of boat (single scull, double scull, quad scull, pairs, fours and eights). Events are also divided into Mens, Womens and Mixed events, as well as age groups (Under 14, Under 16, Youth and Masters [27 years of age and over]). The dates of NRRA regattas can be found here, whilst the order of events is here.

This photo shows part of the boating area at a Northern River Rowing Association regatta at Murwillumbah in 1996. Grafton boats can be seen in the foreground and on the right, around the Grafton Rowing Club boat trailer (the yellow trailer on the right). A group of Grafton veterans can be seen near the river in the top left corner.

The smaller yellow trailer on the left is the old South Grafton trailer, prior to it being written off in January 1999 on the way to an Armidale regatta with a full load of boats. Very little was salvaged from the wreck.

Masters races and some other specific races are handicapped. In handicapped races, each competing crew or sculler is allocated a time based handicap, so that the start is staggered, with the faster competitors giving a head start to the slower ones.

Age Categories
A Minimum age of 27 years
B 36 years or more
C 43 years or more
D 50 years or more
E 55 years or more
F 60 years or more
G 65 years or more
H 70 years or more

Masters age categories are shown at left. For Northern  Rivers Rowing Association Regattas, Masters and other handicaps are based on ability, with the Association handicapper maintaining records over successive years and adjusting handicaps accordingly.

In other regattas, e.g. New South Wales Rowing Association regattas, handicaps are based on the age of the competitors. In crews, the ages are averaged out. Handicaps are set by the Association based on what age category (A-E) the sculler or crew average falls into.

Open races are also held at Northern Rivers regattas - these are open to all competitors, whilst Novice events are held for those competitors who have not previously won any races.

Northern Rivers regattas vary slightly from New South Wales regattas - the New South Wales Rowing Association Handbook provides details of NSW regattas and competition categories.

This photo is from the same NRRA regatta at Murwillumbah, as shown near the top of this page. This shot is looking upriver, across the top of some of the boats from various competing clubs. Mount Warning can be seen in the background.

Grafton Rowing Club also competes in other regattas from time to time, based on rower interest, including the New South Wales Championships, New South Wales Medals regatta, New South Wales and Australian Masters Championships, as well as some other New South Wales and Queensland regattas. Our veterans are currently planning a trip to the Asia Pacific Masters Games in October 2000.

We can cater for all levels of competition in all age groups, categories and boat types.
